2026 Honoree

Fred and Linda Miller

When interviewing for potential candidate to honor in 2026, one educator stated bluntly, “no one is more respected in the Silsbee education community than Fred and Linda Miller."

Starting out as a shop teacher, while working summers at Yellowstone, Fred’s incredible work ethic, dedication to his education (receiving master’s degree), and commitment to his students guided his rise from teacher to assistant principal, then principal, and finally to the pioneering principal selected to open Laura Reeved Elementary. “I never saw one man hold himself with more grace and class under pressure,” offered a former student. “He always did the right thing, set the right example, no matter what. I never saw him pass a piece of garbage without picking it up,” said Gaye Lokey, a future principal mentored by Fred.

After helping to support Fred’s career while raising two successful children, Linda followed Fred into education. Completing her degree at Lamar University, she started her career teaching Earth Science, before moving to her favorite subject, math. She also spent time leading students in Physical Education.

Throughout their time in Silsbee, the Miller’s also served as community leaders. From fundraisers, community parties, to teachers appreciation events, the Miller’s barn just off Knupple Road served as an event headquarters during their education tenure.

Both Linda and Fred mentioned that students approaching them to share memories remain among their favorite things. The couple still manage 9 acres, multiple barns, blueberry bushes, a tree house for the grandkids, while felling oaks, occasionally making sugar cane syrup, and most importantly spending time with children and grandchildren.

Honoring Teachers / Funding Scholarships

Each year, the Silsbee Educators’ Legacy Scholarship will honor one Silsbee educator, by granting scholarships to Silsbee High School Seniors in that educator’s name. The scholarship will be awarded to students who demonstrate a devotion to school, community, family, classmates, and an unbreakable work ethic. Students can pick up applications at the Silsbee High School Office starting in January each year.

Organized by former Silsbee Principal, Gaye Lokey, and several Silsbee Alumni, all who worked full or part-time during their high school careers, the Silsbee Educators’ Legacy Scholarship will assist hardworking Silsbee seniors by expanding their educational opportunities.

The organizers aim to establish an evergreen scholarship, funded by Silsbee Alumni and the Silsbee community, that assists students for generations. One founder stated, “I believe today’s recipients will support this scholarship and the community in the future. Creating a cycle of giving that reflects Silsbee’s incredible spirit.”
